For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit
The Good News of the Gospel
Our entire existence was designed for God and by God, and we will never find lasting satisfaction, joy, or peace in anything other than a relationship with God. But if God's glory is what we were created to see, savor, and reflect, we have a grave problem. We simply don't do it. In fact, we can't do it (Romans 8:7, 1 Cor 2:14). We need our hearts changed, our minds renewed, our spirits resurrected, and our eyes opened if we are to have any hope of doing what we were created to do.
This need is exactly what Jesus Christ came to meet. His life, death, and resurrection provide all that we need to enter into a relationship with God. This is the ultimate goal of the Gospel, and what makes it "good news." Every other blessing of the Gospel- forgiveness, justification, eternal life- is only good news as far as it opens the way to everlasting enjoyment of God Himself.
Forgiveness is not the end goal of the Gospel. We need forgiveness because we need to have our sin taken care of so that we can get to God. God is the end goal of the Gospel, not forgiveness. "Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus...let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water." ~Hebrews 10:19,22
Justification- God declaring us not guilty- is not the end goal of the Gospel either. Justification is the cease-fire, the peace treaty made between God and a sinner who repents. The enmity of sin is declared gone when a person comes to faith, and that person is then welcomed as a child of God, no longer an enemy but now at peace with God. Justification, therefore, is not the end goal- peace with God is. "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." ~Romans 5:1 "But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and destroyed the barrier." ~Ephesians 2:13-14
Eternal life isn't even the goal of the Gospel either. When most people think of eternal life, they think of heaven and being reunited with loved ones, or being free from pain and trouble. While these things are true and good, they are as nothing compared to the surpassing greatness of what the Bible says eternal life truly is: knowing God. Eternal life isn't the goal- knowing God is. "Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the one true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent." ~John 17:3 "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God." ~Revelation 21:3
